Astonishing Art Through The Centuries

Presenter:  Dr. Fernando Casas

In these series of lectures we will examine a large group of astonishingly original works of visual art: painting, sculpture and architecture. Along the course of history––from Paleolithic times to our post modern world––visual artists have produced, every so often, works of art that are unprecedented, extraordinarily new and highly original. How did these works come about and what were the artists thinking when they created them?

We shall marvel, wonder and delight at these works, but we shall also develop––as we examine their origin, nature and novelty––an overall explanatory theory for the emergence and disappearance of these highly original expressions.

A small sampling of the works which we shall study:

  • The Paleolithic Woman from Willendorf
  • Paleolithic Lascaux and Chauvet paintings
  • Akhenaton from Ancient Egypt
  • Kritios Boy from Classical Greece
  • The Pantheon of Ancient Rome
  • Ibn Tulum Mosque of Egypt
  • The Alhambra in Spain
  • Giotto’s Lamentation
  • Bosh’s Garden of Earthly Delights
  • Botticelli’s Birth of Venus
  • Leonardo’s Mona Lisa
  • Michelangelo’s Last Judgment
